An Aboriginal Moomba: 'Out of the Dark'

The exhibition re-visits the 1951 landmark Moomba performance that took traditional and contemporary Indigenous Australian culture out of the shadows and onto the national and international stage!

An Aboriginal Moomba features high quality reproductions of photographs held in PROV's collection and images reproduced from the personal scrapbook of political activist and film-maker Bill Onus.

The image at right is a performer in the all-indigenous production An Aboriginal Moomba: 'Out of the Dark', staged at Melbourne's Princess Theatre by the Australian Aborigines' League in 1951, to mark the Centenary of Victoria and the fiftieth anniversary of Federation.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this exhibition contains images of deceased Indigenous people.

This exhibition was developed with funds received from the Museums Australia (Victoria) Regional Exhibition Touring Fund (RETI) supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria and the Community Support Fund

Echuca Historical Society 50th Anniversary Project
" A Snapshot of Echuca-Moama 2010 "

We invite you to take one or more photographs of your home or business and the street in which you live.

No matter how large/small, new or old any residence or business, is welcome, whether in Echuca or Moama or on a property out of town.

If you also have a photo of an earlier home that was on the site…wonderful.

The information, documents and photographs will be compiled into a file which will be available at the Historical Society archives for genuine research purposes for years to come.

Photographs can be digital or hard copy.

We ask you to have your photographs and information delivered, posted or emailed to Echuca Historical Society, by 1 April 2010.
